The Museum of Photographic Arts (MoPA) seeks a dynamic and experienced professional with strong organizational skills for the position of Curator of Photography.
MoPA is a world class institution dedicated to the expanding medium of photography, film, and video. Located in Balboa Park, the Museum serves over 100,000 patrons annually through exhibitions, educational outreach, and public programs.
Reporting to the Director of Exhibitions and Design, the Curator of Photography is responsible for the overall planning, use, and development of the Museum's permanent collection, as well as planning of the exhibition calendar in a way that reinforces the Museum's mission. Beyond resume experience, we are looking for a dynamic individual capable of initiating and conceptualizing an innovative exhibition calendar to promote MoPA's ongoing reputation of excellence. Successful candidates will possess a creative, strategic programmatic vision and be able to actively and effectively engage in fundraising and donor cultivation activities. Further, he or she will possess a demonstrated track record of excellence in a team-oriented environment, maintaining a keen ability to thoughtfully convey his or her knowledge, passion, and ideas to others.

Job Requirements
Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Exhibition Development
· Exhibition programming covering the history of photography.
· Conceive, write, and schedule temporary exhibitions in photography and related media, with awareness to the larger photographic community.
· Develop, prepare, and maintain exhibition budgets with the Director of Exhibitions and Design.
· Develop and execute plans for exhibition installations while respecting established deadlines and procedures.

Donor Cultivation
· Develop grant proposals for exhibitions with Development staff and help identify potential sources of museum support.
· Assist Executive Director to foster and maintain good working relationships with donors, trustees, and colleagues from regional institutions.

Collection Development
· Cultivate, research, and exhibit the Museum’s permanent collection, including long-range ability to review and redefine the collection’s scope.
· Recommend and solicit acquisitions to expand and strengthen the permanent collection holdings.
· Work with staff on digitization of the collection, and web-based dissemination to facilitate scholarly initiatives and maximize research capacities.

Education and Programming
· Collaborate with the Education staff to support exhibition related programming, docent training, and other educational initiatives.
· Work with Education staff to identify and implement ways of incorporating new technology into the Museum’s projects, programs, and other interpretive strategies to better meet audiences’ need for authentic engagement.

Collection Management
· Assist with database management, in regards to museum generated exhibition content and accuracy of existing content.
· Work with the museum Registrar to determine preservation/conservation needs and priorities.

a. Job related experience as a photographer, with a B.A. degree in photography and practical experience as well has knowledge of the history of photography.
b. Job related experience in curating exhibitions, including photography exhibition. Currently employed as a Special Collections Curator overseeing the Permanent Collection, which includes photographic works.
c. Job related experience in collection management; database management and donor relations.
d. B.A. degree in Art History and pursuing a Masters degree in Curatorial Studies.
e. Job related experience in exhibition schedules, budgets, and grants.
